Preserving Mozambique’s geological heritage

The Mozambique LNG Project participated in the ceremony of the official delivery and reopening of the National Museum of Geology in Maputo on November 16, 2020.

After benefiting from rehabilitation works, the Museum reopened at the same time as the opening of the Permanent Exhibition of Geosciences of Petroleum under the motto: “Petroleum Resources of Mozambique: from Exploration to Production”.

The inaugural event was attended by several individuals, from senior staff at the Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy, TotalEnergies, Technip and Museum employees.

On the occasion, the Director of the National Museum of Geology, Dino Milisse, expressed his satisfaction stating that “we are living a dream becoming true, the result of the Public Private partnership established for the rehabilitation of the Museum and today we have an exhibition that is unique in the country and it will allow more people to understand more about Gas from Exploration to Production.”

Laila Chemene, representing Ronan Bescond, Director-General of TotalEnergies in Mozambique, stressed that: “the support for the museum, aims to contribute, in particular, to increase the knowledge of young people in the area of oil and gas, which can serve as catalyst for its insertion in this relatively new market in Mozambique. At the same time, we help to preserve and flourish an important heritage of the country that, in addition to constituting a repository of knowledge, can be registered, for the visitors it welcomes, as a privileged place for dialogue of cultures”.

In his turn, Teodoro Vales, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy, on behalf of His Excellency, the Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, began by thanking everyone who contributed to making the moment a reality and stated that: “The collection of the National Museum of Geologies, which is a national heritage, should be representative of what our potential is” stressed. Further on, Vales said that being a sample of mineral resources that occur throughout the country, the Museum allows its visitors to travel through the national geological territory.

The Museum is equipped with a room specially dedicated to petroleum Geosciences, with a permanent exhibition that will serve as a source of information for scholars and audiences who seek to know more about oil and gas, in general.

The rehabilitation works of the National Geology Museum are the result of a Public-Private partnership based on the memorandum of understanding signed between: TotalEnergies, Technip, the National Petroleum Institute (INP) and the National Museum of Geology, in February 2020, evaluated in about 235 thousand US dollars, 210 thousand from TotalEnergies and around 25 thousand from TechnipFMC, with a duration of 10 months.
